Little is known about Leroy G. D. Bartlett and I welcome any additional information that other's may have about him.It is known that Leroy was the father of Jefferson Bartlett and was married to Olive King. He was born between 1815 and 1820 in Frederick County, VA. His father was William Bartlett and his mother was Lydia Powell. According to early Property Tax Lists and Federal Census records, he may have had as many as nine brothers and sisters.
Only two of his siblings have been identified: John William Bartlett and Daniel Powell Bartlett.
John William Bartlett left Virginia as a young man and moved to Rush County, IN then moved to Henry County, Iowa which is where he was laid to rest.
Daniel Powell Bartlett also left Virginia as a young man and moved to Rush County, IN then to Polk County, MO, and finally to Coffey County, KS, where he was laid to rest.
Leroy remained in Floyd County, VA, which was previously part of Montgomery County, until sometime after the 1870 Federal Census. His wife Olive is listed as divorced on the 1880 Floyd County, VA census.
Edna Bartlett wrote an article for a book called The History of Grant County, indicating that her father, Jefferson, and his wife Callia left Virginia and moved to Kansas. They stayed with his Uncle Daniel Bartlett.
Mable's notes mention that both Jeff and his father, Leroy, were waiting for the Cherokee Strip to open up for settlement.
Leroy's grandfather was Garner or Gardner Bartlett, which is probably what his middle initial G. stood for. I have not been able to find him on any Federal census records after 1870. There was, however, a male with the name L.G. Bartlett on the 1875 Coffey County, KS State census. He came to Kansas from Virginia and his age is the same as Jefferson's father. He was living with a female with the initial A. that was close to the same age. She came to Kansas from Ohio. Daniel Bartlett was also living in Coffey County, KS during the time of the 1875 Census.
The 1880 Coffey County, KS census shows Angeline Bertelet, married, age 54, and born Ohio. She was enumerated by herself. Further investigation reveals that Angeline's maiden name was Austin and she had been married to Augustus Burr until he died in 1869 in Coffey County, KS.
The Coffey County courthouse furnished a marriage certificate dated September 14, 1874 for a Gardner Bartlett and Angeline Burr. Research done at the Coffey County Historical Society in June of 2002 did not reveal any more information about these Bartletts including death or burial records. There may, however, be more information available at the Coffey County Courthouse in Burlington, KS.
It was noted on the Marriage Certificate that Gardner had been a resident of McPherson County, KS. It is possible that Leroy was granted a divorce while living there and such a record is on file. The Floyd County, VA courthouse has been checked and does not have their divorce records.
