It is known that Daniel P. Bartlett was born January 27, 1822 in Virginia. He married Mahala Osborne in 1841 in Rush County, Indiana. His father was William Bartlett and his mother was Lydia Powell, hence the middle name Powell. According to early Property Tax Lists and Federal Census records, he may have had as many as nine brothers and sisters.Only two of his siblings have been identified: John William Bartlett and Leroy Bartlett.
John William Bartlett left Virginia as a young man and moved to Rush County, IN then moved to Henry County, Iowa which is where he was laid to rest.
Leroy Bartlett remained in Virginia until sometime after the 1870 Federal Census. It is believed that he went to Kansas and lived near his brother Daniel. His place of Interment is not yet known.
Daniel Powell Bartlett also left Virginia as a young man and moved to Rush County, IN. He then moved to Polk County, MO, and finally to Coffey County, KS, where he was laid to rest.
He may have served in the Civil War with his son John W., but proof of enlistment has not yet been found. Although his occupation was often listed as farmer on the Federal census records, it is thought that he traded with the Indians.
He died on July 27, 1889 from injuries related to a kick from a horse.
