Most of the information about Olive King Bartlett was handed down from her great granddaughter Mable Bartlett. I welcome any additional information that other's may have about her.It is known that Olive was the daughter of John King Jr. and speculated that she was a full-blooded American Indian. If you ask each member of the family what tribe she belonged to, you will get a different answer.
According to information gathered from descendants of her daughter Lydia Octavo/Octavia Elizabeth... Bartlett Argabright, she was of the Powhatan Tribe. And to further substantiate this theory, some of her grandchildren were given Powhatan names in honor of their heritage. Not to mention that the Powhatans were also from Virginia.
She was born in the year 1817 in Montgomery County, VA and may have been sent away to a Quaker school around the age of 11.
According to the Montgomery County Marriage Book she married Leroy G. D. Bartlett in 1840 and her father's name was John King Jr. The Federal Census records indicate that Leroy and Olive were together at the time of the 1870 Floyd County, VA census, but apparently parted company sometime before the 1880 census.
Olive was listed as divorced on the 1880 Floyd County, VA census and in 1900 she was listed as a widow. The date she died is not known and there does not seem to be a record of it in Floyd County. Mable mentioned seeing a photo of her grave which is said to be on the homestead in Copper Hill, Floyd County, VA. Her mother-in-law, Lydia, is buried there as well.
