The photo of the Confederate soldier was actually a photo copy that someone had sent to Mable Bartlett. The outside edge of the photo had a notation that he was a brother to Leroy Bartlett and had been killed in the War. It was also noted that his name was either Robert or John.It can be concluded that Leroy's brother John did not die in the Civil War because he has been traced to Iowa and died in 1885. It is possible that the man's name could have been Robert, however, I find this strange because none of Leroy's children were named Robert, nor any of their children.
One other possibility is that the young man was Leroy's son William H. or George Riley Bartlett. Both served in the Civil War. There is evidence of a Confederate soldier with the Rank of Private named William Bartlett who served as a Color Bearer, in Company B, in the 54th Regiment of the VA Infantry.
William's brother George Riley Bartlett served in the same unit and his Civil War Pension papers can be found on the Library of Virginia web site.
William is listed on the 1850 and 1860 Floyd County, VA census, but is not listed on the 1870 census. Mable Bartlett left notes indicating that William died in the Battle of Peach Tree Creek, but evidence indicates that a William H. Bartlett died at Rasaca, Georgia, in September 1863.
