Descendants of Garner Bartlett

Notes

106. Laura Geneva BARTLETT

The name Laura is not listed on the 1880 census, however, there is a male with a name that looks like Lincoln that was not on the 1870 census. Did the census taker goof?

138. John William BARTLETT

Per Mabel Haack's notes, J.W. left Virginia when he was 4 or 5 years old and went to Elm Springs, MO between 1882 - 1887. Ended up in Medford, Grant, OK in 1889 (more like 1893, they were in Kansas in 1889). He moved to Idaho Falls, ID in October 1917. The next year he established his residence at 373 So. Water Ave. The obituary mentions being survived by son George of Gehring, NE, Mrs. Dale Pierce of Columbia Falls, MT., and the others. He was also survived by two sisters Mrs. Lillie McMahon of Emmet (Idaho?) and Mrs. Jim Mott of Wasco, CA. Emmet ID is in Gem County. He was a retired peace officer and had been a sergent.

Somewhere along the way John, wife, and some of his children lived in the Ozarks. Mabel had fond memories of her childhood. I recall her story of "Bob" the badger who slept in their woodpile. Her dad would bring home animals (it appears that he had a fondness for them) and they had a pet or tame oppossum. Mabel was terrified of spiders and it stemmed from tarantulas that were around when she was a child. Note: Tarantulas are common in Arkansas.

A platt map from the Oklahoma Historical Society shows land in Hickory R-5-W and T 28-N, lot #15.

The Rose Hill Cemetery is located at W 21st Street, Idaho Falls.

Dad recalls his mother, Mable, stating that John worked on a barge on the Mississippi River. He picked up a bump-lock trunk from swamped baggage of Buffalo Bill. He recalls that his grandfather had such a trunk in his room when he died.

Leota M. BELMEAR

The middle initial M might stand for Maude. She died when Mabel was only 13. Both of Otie's parents appear on the 1920 census for Harper Co, KS, Harper City twn, Ed#85, enumerated on Feb 14, 1920 in household #404, image 35, sheet 18A. Her sister Bertha, husband Henry Richardson, and children also appear on the 1920 Harper Co, KS, Harper City census.

Notes written to her from her school mates dated 1895. Many referred to her as Lee.

Her obituary, written by her parents, stated that they went to Caldwell, KS in 1883 and stayed there until Oklahoma opened up. They took a homestead north of Medford in 1893.

The 1900 Grant Co, census for Hickory Twp shows John and Leota living in dwelling #58. John's parents (Jefferson & Callie) live in dwelling #57 and Leota's parents (James & Celia Belmear) live in dwelling #60.

239. Gasco Debaugh BARTLETT

Gasco (George) was registered for the draft in Bonneville Co. ID, but birthdate shows Sept 6, 1900. Gasco (George) disappeared when his father remarried a woman named Anna Smith. The story goes that Anna told JW's children to move out and was not very kind to them. Gasco left town and was thought to be dead. There were letters addressed to Mabel Bartlett from various people that mention Gasco so I'm not sure when he disappeared or for how long. His last known address is Sioux Falls, SD or Gering, NE and he went by the name George.

There's a Casco D. Bartlett that married an Edna P. Joslyn in Pocatello, ID Feb 22, 1927. The county of record was Bannock, ID. The ID 105189 vol: 13, page: 286.

Sarah Hanna SMITH

LDS Ancestral File submitted by Ron Nichols shows her name as Anna B. Smith.

I found a letter written by Mabel Bartlett Haack in 1961 that referred to the death of her father, John, and Anna. Anna died two weeks to the day after John and is buried 3 spaces away from him. He and Anna were married only a short time, but Anna became friends with Mae and Edith after the divorce. Anna had a daughter that went to school with Dalores but contracted Menengitis and died.

According to the story that I was told, Anna was like the stepmother in Cinderalla. She had several of her own children and treated them much better than John's children. In fact, she told Gasco "George" to leave home and not to be a burden on the family. Of course I wasn't there but I can only imagine the harsh way she treated him. He left without a trace. His father was heart broken and searched for him for many years without any luck. I don't think anyone knew why he left, except for Anna, until he explained it upon his return. Gasco finally contacted his father many years later and visited him. Although Mabel was too kind to ever speak ill of anyone, she did not portray Anna as a very kind person or stepmother.

139. Lillian Myrtle BARTLETT

"Bonneville County was established February 7, 1911, by the state legislature from the north and east parts of Bingham county. It was named for Captain B. L. E. Bonneville, of the U. S. Army, who explored the Snake River area in the 1830s. A settlement began at the site of the Eagle Rock ferry on the Snake River in 1864, this settlement was renamed Idaho Falls in 1891." Found on the Idaho Genweb website adress: http://www.ida.net/users/elaine/idgenweb/bonnhist.htm

Lilly and Gus appear on the 1910 Bingham County, ID census for Idaho Falls. This raises a question about where Grace was born. Did they return to Kansas then move back to Idaho Falls after her birth?

247. Russell Owen MCMAHAN

He was working for Portland Fendleton Transfer at age 25 and living at RFD #2 La Grande, Oregon 12-29-1941.

He was living in Emmett, Idaho in March 1963.
!Per letter dated 2-27-1964 to Mabel Haack, he sold insurance and his business address was 205 W. Main St., Emmett Idaho.

140. Ruben Pire BARTLETT

He was probably born in Maggodee Township in Franklin Co, VA.
He lived in Idaho Falls, Idaho at the time he married Ruth Smidt.

The date of death could be April 16, 1952. Found in the Gene Pool records on ancestry.com April 2001.There was an obituary for his wife Alberta Huit which gave the year he died and children's names.

Russell McMahan wrote Mabel a letter and referred to Ruben's middle name as Pire.
